Welcome to Jim Fowler's plein air landscape paintings website. Plein air paintings are executed out of doors under natural light and air and represent a direct response to the scene. Jim has been painting in Alaska for over thirty years. He also does landscape paintings wherever he travels, from Northwest Canada to the Oregon coast to the Blue Ridge Mountains. In addition to his plein air landscape paintings, Jim is a children's book illustrator. Some of the original artwork for the book illustrations is available for purchase. Jim grew up on a subsistence farm in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He began drawing and painting as a boy and claims that his art classes are all that kept him in school. In 1973, he followed a lifelong dream and came to Juneau, Alaska, where he married and raised two daughters. About his plein air landscape paintings, Jim says,
"Landscape painting challenges, renews, and surprises me. It takes me out of the studio; I become a participant as well as an observer. It draws together my loves of hiking, kayaking, watching wildlife and painting. Working with changing light and weather conditions, no-see-ums and cold fingers, creates a sense of immediacy and presence that is different than creating illustrations in a studio."
